Private is the best setting for your own private documents, like a list of contacts or a resume. Anyone trying to access the document will have to sign in to their Google Account to verify that they have access to the doc. And from there, you can grant access to other people. When you create a private doc, you are the only person with access to it. And you can see how your doc is set by looking at the icon right next to its title.
